Over 1500 families affected by landslide in Kisii cry out for help

At least
1,552 families in Six Constituencies in Kisii County have been affected by
landslides occasioned by the floods due to the heavy rains being experienced in
the area in the current season.

The families
hail from Bomachoge Chache, Bomachage Borabu, South Mugirango, Kitutu Chache
South, Kitutu Chache North and Bobasi Constituencies with the affected
individuals forced to move out of their homes.

Even though
the Kisii County Government chipped in to offer support to the families, the
magnitude of the landslide indicates that more needs to be done in order to map
them all.

Governor
James Ongwae through its chief officer stakeholders, Civic Education and Disaster
Management Timothy Kambuni has said that the County Disaster Management Department
has moved to offer assorted food items and beddings to the victims since most
of them could not access their houses at the moment.

Bomachoge Chache
MP Alpha Miruka whose constituency is one of the most affected appealed to the
national and county governments to move in with speed to ensure that the area
residents are safe from any calamities.

Interviewed
residents said that they can’t sleep in their houses because they fear that
anything can happen during the night.

The
villagers are appealing to the government that even as it gives priority to the
fight against COVID-19 it should also not forget Kenyans who are suffering due
to floods since most areas were having such an occurrence for the first time,”
said one of the residents

The Kisii
County Government has invited experts from the Department of Mines and Geology
to visit some of the sites prone to landslides with a view to establish whether
the places are habitable or residents need to move to safer areas permanently.
