As Kenya deals with the aftermath of flooding in some parts of the country following heavy rainfall, one of the country leading tourist destinations, Amboseli National Park, has temporarily closed its main airstrip due to floods.

In a statement, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) explained that aircraft operations to the main strip were suspended until conditions improved and the airstrip was deemed safe for landing and takeoff.

“The Kenya Wildlife Service wishes to notify all visitors, tour operators, and airlines operating flights to the Amboseli National Park that the main Amboseli Airstrip is currently flooded due to ongoing heavy rainfall in the area,” it read in part.

The Service provided an alternative landing zone for aircrafts at Tawi Airstrip to support operations at the park and foster safety for all involved parties.

“In the meantime, all airlines and pilots are advised to use the nearby Tawi Airstrip as the alternative landing airstrip. The airstrip is conveniently located approximately 5 kilometres from Kimana Gate, providing continued access to the park for visitors.”

Putting safety first

KWS added that it was closely monitoring the status of the airstrip and would continue to provide timely updates on the status of the airstrip and prevailing weather conditions.

“Visitors and operators are encouraged to remain in contact with KWS for the latest updates…Kenya Wildlife Service appreciates your understanding and cooperation as we prioritise the safety of visitors, crew, and aircraft operations.”

For emergencies or additional information, concerned persons can contact KWS through the toll-free number 0800 597 000.

Recent flooding in the country affected livelihoods, the mobility of people, business operations, and claimed lives. According to reports, 43 people have lost their lives across the country after the heavy rainfall experienced on March 6, 2026. Of the death toll, Nairobi County accounts for 28.

The aftermath of heavy rainfall

Tourism is a vital sector to the Kenyan economy, providing employment for many and much needed foreign exchange for the country. Any disruptions in the sector, such as flooding, pose a challenge to the industry’s smooth running of operations.

As the country braces for the long rains of the March-April-May season, Kenyans are watching the government’s response closely. Nairobi residents have expressed dissatisfaction with the county’s leadership in handling the flooding crisis experienced over the weekend.

They called for better planning of the city, enhanced preparedness for natural disasters, and proper infrastructure management to prevent floods in future. Apart from the loss of lives, Nairobi saw cars washed away, vehicles submerged in flood waters, and citizens rescuing others from being carried away by the waters.
