UASIN GISHU, Kenya – Members of the North Rift chapter of the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) are headed into a collision after some lawyers sought to oust all the current officials.
Already, some of the lawyers led by Michael Wabomba Masinde have submitted a motion to dissolve the branch council at the August 1, 2025, Special General Meeting (SGM).
The intention to move the motion, which could result in the branch council’s dissolution, has already been communicated to LSK president Faith Odhiambo by lawyer Masinde.
“The entire current LSK North Rift Council will be immediately dissolved due to loss of members’ confidence arising from financial improprieties, unresolved audit queries, lack of accountability, unresponsiveness, and failure to fulfil the wishes of members,” said Masinde.
News 9 Kenya understands that the chairman of the LSK North Rift branch council is Henry Kenei, a lawyer from Eldoret; the branch secretary is Claire Karuga, and the treasurer is Marion Rotich.
What should happen after the disbandment of the Council
In-house representatives Geoffrey Owino, Moses Rotich, Margaret Kinyua, Felix Mukabane, Nickson Keter, Geoffrey Lowesikou, and Shadrack Munyesu are among the general members of the branch council.
According to Masinde, a caretaker Council of seven members, drawn from Advocates of proven integrity and good standing, shall be appointed by the SGM.
“The Council will oversee the affairs of the Society on an interim basis, facilitate an independent forensic audit of the Society’s financial records and report to members within 45 days. Organise and conduct elections for a new Council within 60 days from the date of this resolution,” he added.
Masinde further wants the outgoing Council members to hand over all records, accounts, and assets of the Society to the Caretaker Council within 7 days from the date of the resolution.
The motion, Masinde said, is based on grounds such as the LSK Council being mandated under the Law Society of Kenya Act and its Regulations to act in the best interest of the members, ensure accountability, and promote transparency in the management of the Society’s affairs.
Why Michael Wabomba Masinde wants the LSK officials ousted
He also cites serious financial improprieties, unresolved audit queries, and failure to account for members’ funds that have been raised against the current Council, resulting in an alleged loss of confidence by members.
“The Council has also demonstrated gross unresponsiveness to members’ concerns and failure to implement resolutions passed by members, contrary to the principles of good governance and accountability,” explained Masinde.
The legal practitioner reiterated that members have a right under the Law Society of Kenya Act, its Regulations, and the Society’s Constitution to demand accountability, transparency, and removal of office bearers who fail to uphold these obligations.
News 9 Kenya understands that over 1,000 lawyers drawn from Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, Nandi, and Turkana counties are members of the LSK branch.
The proposal dated July 21, 2025, was also seconded by Evans Kkipkemboi, another member of the LSK North Rift branch.
