President William Ruto has affirmed that the affordable housing project will be implemented despite the opposition it is facing.

Speaking during the national executive retreat at the Lake Naivasha Resort, Ruto reiterated his stand on the housing programme.

“We will implement the housing programme. I don’t want to say by whatever means possible. I have just said we will implement it. We will because it is what other progressive countries have done. It has worked. It is not an invention.”

The head of state also had a response for those opposing his housing plan saying,

“And even those who are opposed to the housing programme, it is not because they don’t know that it is the right thing. Their problem is that it is us who are implementing not them. It is just as simple as that.”

Ruto also urged leaders to desist from 2027 elections politicking and instead focus on the development of the country.

“We have a manifesto that I believe if implemented, and when implemented, it can transform Kenya. We have the numbers, both in senate and national assembly, to assist us to change Kenya. I want to urge you. I know there is always a temptation to do what politicians do and that is to focus on the next election. I want to urge you. Let us do what leaders would do. Let’s focus on the transformation of our country.”

Ruto has had a difficult time implementing government initiatives like the housing project and social health insurance fund, which have been involved in court cases.

The affordable housing project has been the most affected with court rulings terming it unconstitutional but Ruto’s government has been keen on appealing the verdicts.

The court ruling that found the housing levy unconstitutional had workers’ associations excited with union leaders asking employers not to continue deducting the housing levy from salaried Kenyans.

With Ruto’s staunch resolve to have the housing programme implemented, only time will tell whether the court battles will end and have the project successfully implemented in the country.
