Former Chief Justice David Maraga has called on Kenyans, especially the youth, to register as voters as the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) resumes the continuous voter registration exercise across the country.
Taking to his X account on Monday, September 29, 2025, Maraga said he would personally visit registration centres in Nairobi County to rally citizens to take part in the exercise.
“The big day is finally here! Together with a section of our youth, I will be visiting registration centres in Nairobi County as we advocate for voter registration. I urge you, especially young and new voters, to come out in large numbers to register,” Maraga stated.
The retired CJ, who has been pushing for civic participation, launched the People’s Ballot Revolution last week. The campaign aims to add at least five million new voters to the roll ahead of the 2027 General Election. It was flagged off in Mombasa County on September 24, 2025 and will be extended to all the 47 counties and the diaspora.
“We are pleased to launch the People’s Ballot Revolution campaign, which aims to add 5 million new voters to the voters’ register. The launch starts in County 001 (Mombasa). We shall traverse all 47 Counties plus the Diaspora! Your contribution to this voter registration campaign will be deeply appreciated,” Maraga said.
Meanwhile, the IEBC reminded the public that voter registration is a constitutional right under Article 88 of the 2010 Constitution. The Commission clarified that continuous registration allows citizens to be added to the roll at any time, and includes services such as:
- New voter registration
- Correction or update of voter details
- Transfer of voter registration to a new electoral area
- Verification of voter details
To be eligible, an individual must:
- Be a Kenyan citizen aged 18 years or above
- Possess a valid Kenyan National ID or Passport
- Not have registered before as a voter
- Not have been convicted of an election offence within the last five years
- Not have been declared to be of unsound mind
The IEBC confirmed the exercise will also prepare the ground for the upcoming by-election scheduled for November 27, 2025. Officials urged Kenyans to take advantage of the process to ensure they are included in the roll, stressing that “Your Vote, Your Future” remains the guiding principle of democracy.
