Nandi County Senator Kiprotich Arap Cherargei has been
arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) over hate speech.
Cherargei was on Tuesday taken to Milimani Law Courts to
face charges over ethnic contempt, following remarks the embattled senator made
in August 17, at at Kilibwoni Primary School.
The charges amount to ethnic contempt contrary to Section
62(1) of the National Cohesion and Integration Act as well as incitement to
violence contrary to Section 96(a) of the Penal Code.
This is not the first time the Senator is being summoned by
the DCI.
Recently, Cherargei was summoned by the DCI over perceived
inflammatory remarks he made at the funeral of late teacher Dominic Kiptoo
Choge.
The vocal politician claimed that supporters of Deputy
President William Ruto were “marking and profiling” those opposed to his presidential
bid.
He further warned that when the time comes they would “deal
with” them (Ruto’s opponents).
