The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) now want a clear and elaborate drought mitigation plan from the government.
Led by the National Assembly minority leader John Mbadi, ODM leaders accused Deputy President William Ruto and other government officials disputing claims over drought hunger-related death in the affected regions.
Suna East MP Junet Mohammed questioned why Kenyans have been hit by hunger yet the government has enough food.
“We have listened patiently to comments by senior government officials on this grave matter, and we do not see the kind of seriousness we expect to see from their statements. By saying that the news that people have died is ‘fake’, yet government officials on the ground have confirmed reports of death to be true, is careless, irresponsible and insensitive,” said Mr Mohammed.
The DP earlier denied reports of death from the drought affected areas, terming it as ‘fake news’.
Officials from the disaster management department also linked the said death reports to diseases and other unknown cause.
This sentiments were echoed all over the whole governing body, including Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri and his Devolution counterpart Eugene Wamalwa.
CS Wamalwa said government officials on the ground confirmed that no such thing as hunger-related death has been reported.
The ODM leaders called on President Uhuru Kenyatta to initiate an urgent response to all 17 drought affected counties.
These counties include; Wajir, Tana River, West Pokot, Tharaka Nithi, Samburu, Nyeri, Marsabit, Laikipia, Mandera, Lamu, Kitui, Kilifi, Isiolo, Garissa, Embu, Baringo and Turkana.
