Kanduyi Stadium is set to undergo construction to meet top-notch standards and host this year’s Madaraka Day Celebrations.
Speaking at the stadium, the Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs and Sports Ababu Namwamba revealed that his ministry is working with the county government to ensure construction is completed.
“Kanduyi has always been among the top venues for sports in Kenya…We are delighted that we have agreed with the county government to work together to raise Kanduyi Stadium to the level it deserves. We have also agreed that we hasten completion because of Madaraka Day.”
Namwamba also added that the construction will meet international standards.
“We will also pay keen attention to the basics that will make Kanduyi a venue for international events. Things like changing room size, quality, the number, floodlights for nighttime games, a high quality pitch, parking area, and VIP rooms, we will fulfill these things.
This comes as Kenya is set to hold AFCON games in 2027 with its East African partners Uganda and Tanazania.
Stadium renovations ahead of AFCON 2027
Kasarani and Nyayo Stadia were closed temporarily late last year for renovations as the county prepares to host the African football tournament set to happen in three years’ time.
The renovations need to meet the Confederation of African Football (CAF) stipulations and will include an extensive overhaul, which will entail improving the terraces, canopy, changing rooms, media lighting, drainage systems, and the introduction of coded seats.
The Ministry of Sports aims to complete renovations in 12 months and the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are responsible for the construction.
Kanduyi Stadium joins the list of stadia being renovated in the country for upcoming local and international events.
AFCON 2024
AFCON games kicked off on January 13 and will end on February 11. Internationational and local stars have graced the coveted tournament held in Ivory Coast.
The games have seen their share of drama as the former Taifa Stars Head Coach Adel Amrouche made controversial allegations against Morocco that saw him fired by the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF).
Amrouche made the claims before the AFCON games began, causing Morocco to lodge a complaint that saw him banned for eight matches.
TFF later fired him and replaced him with Hemed Morocco.
