Golf clubs to close as government intensify sporting measures to curb Coronavirus

The
government has ordered the closure of all golf clubs in the country, even as it
increase measures in the sporting sector to curb the spread of COVID-19
pandemic.

Addressing
the public on Tuesday, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said all open air
sporting clubs must observe social distancing.

“It has
come to our attention that most people in these clubs do not observe social
distance. I therefore direct that all golf clubs must be closed with immediate
effect,” said CS Kagwe.

The CS also
said that all club houses in the country should remain closed, to reduce the
risk of spreading the virus.

There are about
forty golf clubs in country where the Kenya Open Golf Championship and other
games takes place.

With the
leading Karen Country Club, Muthaiga Golf Club –home of the Kenya Golf Union –to
the Royal Nairobi Golf Club –which dates back more than 100 years, golfers will
have to face it off until Coronavirus is contained.

The number
of COVID -19 cases in the country have increased to 172, with the government
warning Kenyans to prepare for the worsed in the coming days.

“The
most important thing to to now is to stay at home, keep social distance to
avoid the spread of the virus,” said the CS.
