Medical experts have warned that ventilators could reduce
chances of survival for COVID-19 patients is subjected at an early stage of the
virus.
As lack of ventilators across the world continues to be a
problem, many countries have fallen fond of subjecting those with existing
conditions to these life support machines, once they test positive for COVID-19
The sun reports that, two-thirds of coronavirus sufferers
who are hooked up to the potentially life-saving machines in the UK do not
survive.
A report from New York City shows at least 80 per cent of
Covid-19 patients subjected to ventilators have died.
Ventilators work in the sense that they push oxygen into patient’s
lungs, after a patient has undergone sedating and sticking of a tube into the
throat, which allows air into the lungs.
Nearly 40 to 50 per cent of patients with severe respiratory
distress die while on ventilators.
Health officials suggest putting pressurized oxygen into the
lungs can irritate the organs and damage them, writes the sun.
Critical care physician in New York city Scott Weingart, in
a previous interview said coronavirus patients get worse “as a direct
result of intubation”.
“High levels of force and oxygen levels, both in quest
of restoring oxygen saturation levels to normal, can injure the lungs. I would
do everything in my power to avoid intubating patients.”
When lungs expedite to inflammation, fluid from nearby blood
vessels leak into tiny air sacs in the lungs –which makes breathing harder and
cuts off the supply of oxygen to the organs.
Ventilators come in as a last resort when patients’ levels
of oxygen fall.
