Babu Owino wants William Ruto to prioritise unga prices before fertiliser

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has called on President William Ruto to reduce the cost of unga.

A 2kg packet of unga currently retails at around KSh 200 across major supermarkets and small retail shops in the country.

Fertiliser subsidy

President William Ruto’s administration directed a reduction in fertiliser prices from KSh 6,500 to KSh 3,500 ahead of the short rain seasons.

On Tuesday, September 20, the Ministry of Agriculture released KSh 3.6 billion to subsidise 71,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser, distributed to farmers this week.

Rising cost of living

Owino took to his Twitter handle listing down what the Kenya Kwanza government should consider in its mandate to cushion Kenyans from the rising cost of living.

“Kenya Kwanza should reduce the cost of unga, lower taxes on clothes… reduce rent for Kenyans and make education free,” read Owino’s tweet in part.

In August 2022, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) reported that inflation in the country had hit a record high of 8.5%.

This was a result of the rising prices of essential food commodities and petroleum products.

Fuel prices

The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) pump price review for September 2022 increased fuel prices by over KSh 20.

Currently, a litre of super petrol retails at KSh 179.30, diesel at 165 and kerosene at KSh 147.74.
