County leaders and health officials have thrown their support behind a new plan by Thalia Psychotherapy’s local arm, Mindful Kenya, to integrate mental health services into every hospital and clinic in the country.
The initiative, unveiled on Tuesday aims to address Kenya’s growing mental health crisis by making care accessible, affordable and stigma-free under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) program.
Chief Operating Officer Mercy Mwende said the goal is to make mental health care as routine as maternity services or malaria treatment.
“Mental health is not a luxury. It’s a necessity,” she said. “If a Kenyan walks into their nearest clinic, they should be able to get mental health support — without stigma, without huge costs and without travelling hundreds of kilometres.”
Instead of building new facilities, Thalia’s model leverages existing health infrastructure. It provides trained specialists, digital screening tools and operational systems to hospitals and clinics, with revenue shared between the facilities and Thalia to keep the program self-sustaining.
“We’ve been talking about mental health for years,” one governor remarked.
“This is the first time I’ve seen a plan that can work within our budgets and reach our people fast.”
Kenya faces rising suicide rates, widespread depression and anxiety and growing substance abuse. According to the Ministry of Health, most citizens who need care never receive it due to cost, stigma or lack of nearby services , a situation especially dire in rural areas where psychiatrists may be hundreds of kilometres away.
By embedding mental health care into local hospitals and dispensaries, counties could bring services closer to the people who need them most.
Thalia is piloting similar programs in Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria and Malawi.
If the Kenyan rollout succeeds, health experts say the country could set a benchmark for integrated mental health care in Africa
As the conference wraps up, one question lingers among policymakers: Could this be the moment when universal mental health becomes a reality in Kenya?
