Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has pledged to restore full order in the Central Business District (CBD), warning that parking boys demanding illegal levies from motorists will no longer be tolerated.
Speaking after joining a city cleanup exercise, Sakaja said the county, in collaboration with the National Police Service, has intensified security operations to clear streets of criminal activities and make the CBD safer and more vibrant.
“We are restoring order by cleaning the city, clearing dens that harbour criminals, repairing vandalized lighting infrastructure and installing more lights in the CBD,” Sakaja said.
The governor noted that the operation has already led to a significant drop in reported crime cases, but promised that enforcement will continue until Nairobi’s CBD is completely safe for motorists, pedestrian, and businesses.
Sakaja also addressed the growing menace of parking boys who demand money from motorists on top of official county parking fees. Many motorists have reported harassment, vandalism or theft if they refuse to pay the illegal charges.
“This issue is being dealt with firmly , no one will be spared,” Sakaja said, adding that the county is keen to reclaim public parking spaces that have been taken over by the groups.
He further announced that Nairobi County will begin registering street photographers who crowd the CBD, especially over weekends, to ensure accountability and improve public safety.
On public transport, Sakaja said new measures will regulate the number of matatus and boda bodas entering the CBD at any given time. Riders will also be required to wear reflector jackets for better visibility and compliance.
Last week, the county government, working with Kenya Power and police, dismantled an illegal power connection that had interfered with CCTV systems and street lighting , a setup Sakaja said emboldened criminal gangs.
“With joint operations, we are stamping out these crimes. Several suspects have already been arrested, and investigations are ongoing,” he added.
The governor emphasized that his administration is committed to transforming the city into a clean, orderly and secure business hub that reflects Nairobi’s status as Kenya’s capital.
