Kenya Airways has announced an increase in flight frequency to Kisumu over the weekend to accommodate the high travel demand as thousands of mourners head to the lakeside city for the funeral of the late Raila Amolo Odinga.
In a statement issued on Friday, October 17, the national carrier said it had added several flights and upgraded aircraft to ensure smooth travel for passengers traveling to Kisumu for the historic event.
The airline confirmed two additional flights for Friday — KQ656 departing at 1330 hours and KQ658 at 1900 hours. On Saturday, October 18, an early morning flight, KQ650, will depart at 0650 hours, while KQ654, scheduled for 0805 hours, has been upgraded to a Boeing 737 to handle increased passenger numbers.
The upgrades continue on Sunday, October 19, with KQ654 (0805 hours) and KQ671 (1900 hours) both set to operate using Boeing 737s.
By Monday, flights KQ654 and KQ670 will also use Boeing 737s to facilitate the return travel of mourners.
“We remain committed to ensuring seamless travel for all our guests,” Kenya Airways said in the statement, reaffirming its dedication to supporting Kenyans traveling to pay their last respects to the late opposition leader.
The surge in demand follows nationwide mourning after the passing of Raila Odinga, whose funeral is expected to draw thousands of mourners, dignitarie, and political leaders to Kisumu County.
Kenya Airways’ move reflects the growing need for efficient transport during the period, with the Kisumu route witnessing one of the highest booking volumes in recent years.
