The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has officially announced its nationwide recruitment exercise scheduled to take place in October 2025.
In a public notice released on Monday, KDF said it will be recruiting for multiple categories including General Service Officer (GSO) Cadets – Regular, GSO Cadets – Graduate, Specialist Officers, General Duty Recruits, Tradesmen and Women, as well as Defence Forces Constables.
“The Kenya Defence Force (KDF) is pleased to announce to the public the recruitment of officers and recruits across the country,” the notice read in part. The military encouraged eligible Kenyans to prepare their documents early and follow official communication channels for updates.
The GSO Cadet – Regular programme targets young Kenyans who have completed secondary school and meet the minimum academic and physical requirements to join as officers in training. The GSO Cadet – Graduate category, on the other hand, is designed for university graduates with specialized skills who will undergo officer training before joining different KDF units.
Specialist Officer positions are expected to attract professionals such as doctors, engineers, IT experts and other skilled personnel critical to modern military operations. The notice also includes opportunities for tradesmen and women, covering technical skills such as mechanics, electricians and drivers, while the general duty recruits and constables will form part of the regular infantry and support roles.
Although KDF has not yet published the specific recruitment schedule, the exercise will take place in all counties, a process that typically lasts several weeks. Successful candidates are normally expected to undergo medical screening, physical fitness assessments and document verification at designated recruitment centres.
The Ministry of Defence has urged interested applicants to visit the official KDF website and follow its verified social media accounts for the full list of dates, venues and eligibility criteria. This is aimed at curbing the rising cases of recruitment fraud, where unsuspecting job seekers have been conned by individuals posing as KDF officers.
KDF routinely conducts recruitment drives to bolster the strength of its land, air and naval forces, with the October exercise anticipated to attract thousands of applicants seeking careers in military service.
KDF recruitment is one of the most competitive exercises in the country, drawing thousands of applicants every year. In past exercises, long queues have been seen in towns such as Eldoret, Mombasa, Kisumu and Nairobi as youths turn up hoping to secure a spot in the military.
The Defence Forces play a critical role in safeguarding Kenya’s sovereignty and participating in regional peacekeeping missions, including the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).
