Kenya Pipeline Company has responded following a tragic accident involving a staff bus and a Kenya Railways train on Thursday afternoon.
The accident occurred at a railway crossing near the company’s Morendat Training and Conference Centre in Naivasha.
The staff bus was ferrying employees home after the morning shift when it was struck as it crossed the railway line.
In a statement on Thursday, August 7, KPC confirmed the incident, saying emergency teams were deployed to evacuate the injured and investigate the cause of the accident.
KPC Managing Director Joe Sang confirmed that emergency response protocols were immediately activated. Injured staff were swiftly evacuated to hospitals in Naivasha, while arrangements for airlifts are underway for those in critical condition to ensure they receive specialised medical attention.
“We are working closely with the medical teams and local authorities to ensure the injured receive the best possible care and to facilitate airlifts for the critically injured,” said Sang. “At this time, our thoughts and prayers are with our colleagues and their families.”
First responders from KPC and local emergency services coordinated efforts at the scene, stabilising the injured and managing the complex evacuation process. The company has emphasised that its primary focus remains on supporting affected staff and their families.
In the wake of the incident, KPC has also deployed internal welfare and psychosocial support teams to assist employees and their loved ones through the traumatic experience.
“We assure the public and all our stakeholders that we are doing everything possible to manage the situation and provide the necessary support to those affected,” Sang stated.
“We will continue to share updates as more details become available,” he further stated.
The exact cause of the crash remains unclear. However, adverse weather conditions, heavy rain and fog that may have led to poor visibility are being considered as a possible factor.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
