Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has called out the United Opposition over tribal politics.

Speaking in Cherangani Constituency on Sunday during the launch of Cherangani United Tournament, at Makutano Primary School in Makutano Ward, he dismissed political campaigns unit calls by Opposition as they are based on tribal lines.

He urged the residents of Trans Nzoia not to be swayed by leaders campaigning on pretence of national unity, while dividing the country on tribal basis.

Murkomen cautions leaders on divisive politics

“As we prepare for elections, let us avoid leaders that are promoting tribalism, hatred and ethnic clashes across the country. I want to plead with us, that our politics should bring us together and not divide us. We should at all cost avoid leaders inciting any community in our county,” Murkomen said.

The Interior CS further cautioning leaders using youths to cause chaos in political rallies, by buying them alcohol and drugs to disrupt gatherings will face the law.

“We also want to avoid politics of using our young men to cause mayhem in rallies. Those politicians buying drugs and issuing handouts to them; We are working closely with our security forces to catch up with you,” he cautioned.

Murkomen further pleaded with residents to shun political rallies that encourage division among Kenyans, sentiments which were echoed by Kericho County Governor Dr. Eric Mutai, who was in the company.

Mutai slammed the Opposition brigade led by former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, People Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua and DAP-K Eugene Wamalwa.

According to Mutai, the United Opposition lacks a clear agenda for Kenya, and only running on “Wantam” slogan, and table their agenda for the people of Kenya and not divide Kenyans on tribal basis.

“I want to tell those going round the country singing “Wantam”, ni watu wenye hawana agenda ya Kenya. Their only agenda is to divide our people on ethnic backgrounds. If you want to compete and be the president, sell your agenda to Kenyans. You can witness development across the country led by President William Ruto,” Mutai echoed.

Their sentiments further receiving back from leaders from the county including Senator Allan Chesang, Kiminini MP Kakai Bissau, who urged residents to back up the Ruto led administration to receive development that the region has been deprived for long.

Hitting out to Governor George Natembeya, Bissau said that the county’s current predicament is a result of the leadership choice they made in 2022 general elections.

“Hapa Trans Nzoia tunashida ya uongozi, na hiyonshida tulijiletea wenyewe. Come 2027, we are going to change that,” Bissau said.

However, key United Democratic Alliance (UDA), leaders including former CS Susan Nakhumicha, MP Chris Wamalwa and Trans Nzoia Woman Representative Lilian Siyoi were not present at the meeting.

President William Ruto develop tour

The CS disclosed scheduled President William Ruto’s development tour of the county. Cherangani Constituency is set to benefit from the affordable housing programme, with units set to be commission in Kachibora, Biribiriet and Suwerwa.

Other projects to be commissioned include construction of modern markets at Sibanga, Tigoini, Makutano,Suwerwa and Kachibora.

Additionally, the President will commission roads linking the Constituency to other regions including Makutano, Geta, Suwerwa, Kachibora, Kapsara, and Kiptoi.

“Maendeleo iko kwa serikali. The president will be here to commission historic development projects. From commission of roads around here and new modern markets. He also understands the water crisis in the county and working on expansion of the Kapolet water project around,” he confirmed.

His sentiments coming as UDA leaders continue to do sensitisation meetings across the county, ahead of the anticipated President’s development tour of the county.
