The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has announced the public auction of properties linked to former Migori Governor Okoth Obado, following a court order for the forfeiture of assets valued at KSh 428.6 million.
According to EACC, the auction will run from October 9 to 17, 2025 and will include prime residential and commercial properties located in Migori, Kisumu and Nairobi counties.
Among the assets up for auction are:
- Sunshine Centre commercial block in Migori
- A block of apartments under construction in Lolwe Estate, Kisumu
- Two five-storey residential blocks with 40 units in Suna East, Migori
- Two apartments in Greenspan, Nairobi
- Maisonettes in Loresho and Greenspan, Nairobi
- An apartment along Riara Road, Nairobi
- Residential property in Kamagambo, Migori
EACC stated that the auction is part of its continued efforts to recover proceeds of corruption and restore integrity in public service.
“EACC obtained orders for the forfeiture of assets valued at KSh 428,600,000 from former Migori County Governor Okoth Obado, along with his children and close associates,” the commission said in a statement.
The commission has urged members of the public interested in participating in the auction to contact its hotlines for details on the bidding process.
The auction of Obado’s properties comes amid a wave of high-profile investigations and asset recovery efforts by EACC. Between 2018 and 2021, the commission recovered about KSh 22.8 billion in assets and misappropriated funds, while preventing potential losses worth KSh 32.5 billion through proactive investigations.
In recent months, EACC has intensified its operations, reclaiming public land worth billions of shillings in several counties. For example, the commission recently repossessed KSh 1.2 billion worth of land on Chale Island in Kwale, KSh 1.6 billion worth of public land in Kisumu and KSh 320 million worth of grabbed land in Kakamega and Bungoma counties.
The commission has also been conducting lifestyle audits targeting county officials and national government officers. Over 822 county officials are under investigation in cases involving approximately KSh 1.6 billion, including payroll fraud, irregular tenders and embezzlement of allowances.
EACC has also carried out major raids, including a high-profile operation in Garissa County, targeting contracts worth KSh 1.2 billion and a similar probe in Busia County, where six senior officials were arrested in connection with KSh 1.4 billion irregular tenders.
Currently, four sitting governors and eleven former governors are under active investigation, with several cases already forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for prosecution.
The upcoming auction marks one of the largest asset recoveries in recent years and signals the commission’s commitment to hold high-ranking officials accountable for corruption.
