BUSIA, Kenya – A silent act of bravery that demonstrated the life-saving potential of mobility and the steadfast dedication of community health workers took place in the silence of a March night in Teso North Sub-County within Busia County.
An urgent knock on the door of Phaustine Omasete, a committed Community Health Promoter (CHP) working with the Katotoi Community Unit, broke the silence.
A young couple in distress stood in front of him. The woman, who was only 22 years old, was bleeding profusely after miscarrying two weeks prior. They had no way to get to the closest medical facility.
Phaustine made a fast assessment of the situation’s seriousness. He referred them to Ang’urai Health Centre after assessing the emergency and offering initial counselling.
How Phaustine received a Buffalo Bicycle
In that instant, a basic, life-altering tool changed what could have been a terrible and sad situation.
A few weeks earlier, the Busia County Government, in collaboration with Living Goods and World Bicycle Relief, had given Phaustine a Buffalo Bicycle.
That bicycle turned into a symbol of hope. Now that he could take action, the woman’s husband used it to quickly take his wife to the medical facility.
She got immediate attention there. After the bleeding was under control, the couple went home in the wee hours of the morning feeling safe, thankful, and profoundly touched by the promptness and kindness of the response they had received.
This experience made Phaustine, who works with 114 households, realise how important mobility is to his job.
When lives were on the line, he could react quickly and efficiently since he was no longer limited by great distances or a lack of transportation.
Why Buffalo Bicycles is a game-changer
There is no doubt that this tale serves as a potent reminder that even small expenditures, such as giving CHPs dependable bicycles, can have a significant impact.
In neglected and rural areas, where medical services are sometimes few and far between, every minute matters. The ability to move around can be the difference between success and failure.
It is now emerging that the Buffalo Bicycle is more than just a mode of transportation because of the vision of those who see the importance of providing frontline healthcare personnel with necessary equipment.
In the hands of committed health advocates like Phaustine, it is a sign of optimism, a means of influence, and a tool of change.
