Embattled Kericho Governor Dr. Erick Mutai has called on President William Ruto to dissolve the Kericho County Government, citing a total breakdown in relations between his administration and the County Assembly.
His remarks came following the tabling of a fresh impeachment motion against him on Wednesday.
Speaking shortly after the motion was presented, Governor Mutai described the political atmosphere in the county as toxic and unmanageable, stating it had crippled service delivery and governance.
“I am officially pursuing a constitutional petition under Article 192 of the Constitution to dissolve the County Government of Kericho,” he announced at the county headquarters.
To bolster the petition, the governor said his administration would embark on a countywide campaign to collect signatures from residents supporting the move.
“Let us go back to the people. Let’s have fresh elections and allow residents to decide who should lead them. My government cannot operate in this hostile environment. We will not be held hostage. We trust that once the President receives our petition, he will honour the will of Kericho residents and allow for a fresh mandate,” said Mutai.
The governor’s declaration comes in response to a renewed impeachment effort launched by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony. The motion, dated August 6, was tabled with the Clerk of the County Assembly, who confirmed it met all requirements outlined in Standing Order No. 70.
This marks the second attempt to remove Governor Mutai from office since he assumed leadership in 2022. The earlier attempt, made in 2024, was dismissed by the Senate on procedural grounds.
According to Rogony, the latest motion is driven by serious concerns over governance and accountability. The petition includes a signed list of MCAs backing the process, documentary evidence, and a formal notice of motion.
Governor Mutai, however, dismissed a recent report by an Ad Hoc Committee of the County Assembly, which recommended the dismissal of the County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Finance and disciplinary action against seven Chief Officers. He alleged the report was influenced by bribery and political manipulation.
Mutai also turned his criticism toward Deputy Governor Fred Kirui, accusing him of betrayal and being the source behind the damaging Assembly report.
“I made a mistake appointing my deputy. He is the whistleblower behind this entire Assembly report,” Mutai said.
Despite the political tensions, the governor said he is prepared to appear before the County Assembly next week to respond to the allegations brought against him.
