Three-time Olympic 1500m champion Faith Kipyegon added another glittering chapter to her extraordinary career by storming to victory in the women’s 1500 metres final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
Kipyegon crossed the finish line in 3:52.15, successfully defending her crown to become a four-time 1500m world champion. The Kenyan superstar, who also owns a world title and Olympic silver in the 5000m, further cemented her status as one of the greatest middle-distance runners in history.
“This was my dream , another world title, continuing to make history. I am so happy to be in Tokyo; it’s bringing back so many memories from the Olympics. The energy from the spectators is incredible, I’m truly grateful and so happy today,” Kipyegon said after the win.
Kenya’s celebrations doubled when Dorcus Ewoi stormed home for silver in a lifetime best 3:54.92, marking her first international medal and only her second career sub-four-minute performance.
The embrace between Kipyegon and Ewoi at the finish line was one of the defining images of the championships, symbolizing Kenyan unity and dominance in middle-distance running.

Australia’s Jessica Hull completed the podium with bronze in 3:55.16, while Nelly Chepchirchir of Kenya finished a close fourth, also setting a personal best of 3:55.25 and narrowly missing a Kenyan sweep.
Kipyegon’s victory comes in a record-breaking season. Earlier this year, she lowered her own world 1500m record to 3:48.68 at the Prefontaine Classic and ran the fastest mile ever by a woman 4:06.42 at the Breaking4 event in Paris.
She still holds the official women’s mile world record of 4:07.64, set in 2023.
President William Ruto led the nation in celebrating the historic moment:
“Once again, the indomitable @Kipyegon_Faith has brought immense glory to Kenya. By retaining the 1500m world title for the third successive time, she has affirmed her place as a once-in-a-generation athlete. Oh ye of little Faith , she has shown us all that greatness is not a dream beyond reach but a standard to be met by all Kenyans! Thank you, Faith, for raising the bar for our nation, and thank you for drawing Dorcus Ewoi with you in an extraordinary 1–2 finish. Kenya celebrates you both:” he stated.
