Machakos County Governor Wavinya Ndeti has officially launched the third edition of the Governor Wavinya Cup, one of the most anticipated grassroots sports tournaments in Machakos County.
The event, which brings together hundreds of young footballers from across the county, is aimed at promoting youth talent, nurturing discipline and fostering community spirit through sports.
Speaking at the tournament’s opening ceremony, Governor Wavinya delivered an inspiring message to the players, coaches and fans in attendance, calling on them to play with heart and respect for the game.
“I wish all the teams the very best as they begin the third edition of the Governor Wavinya Cup. Play with passion, discipline and teamwork as you showcase your talents,” she said, drawing cheers from the crowd.
The Governor emphasized that the tournament is more than just a competition, describing it as a platform for youth empowerment and a stepping stone to professional football careers. She encouraged players to view the event as an opportunity to sharpen their skills, build friendships and represent their communities with pride.
“Sports is not just about winning. It is about teamwork, disciplin, and building character. These are the values we want our young people to embrace, both on and off the pitch,” she added.
Governor Wavinya also used the occasion to address broader social issues affecting youth in Machakos and beyond. She urged participants and spectators to maintain a clean and safe environment throughout the tournament and to resist negative influences such as drug and substance abuse.
“As we celebrate this tournament, let us also remember to take care of our environment and say NO to drug and substance abuse,” she urged, noting that sports can be a powerful alternative to destructive behavior.
Her message resonated strongly with the audience, particularly with the youth, many of whom see the tournament as an opportunity to stay engaged and avoid risky habits.
In a light-hearted but powerful moment, Governor Wavinya specifically encouraged young women to embrace sports and break stereotypes that limit their participation.
“Vijana tusakate dimba, wasichana tucheze ball, hatubebi ball,” she said, prompting laughter and applause as she encouraged girls to actively play rather than just watch from the sidelines.
The Governor highlighted the importance of inclusivity in sports, noting that empowering girls through football builds confidence and opens doors to future opportunities.
The Governor Wavinya Cup, now in its third edition, has steadily grown into a key fixture in the county’s sports calendar. Organizers expect a record number of teams to participate this year, with matches scheduled to be played across various sub-counties.

The tournament’s previous editions have produced notable success stories, with several players being scouted for county and national teams, while others have secured scholarships and opportunities to play at higher levels.
Sports officials say this year’s edition will feature improved organization, better officiating and enhanced support for teams, including provision of kits and training equipment.
“We want to give every young person the chance to shine. This tournament is not just about competition; it is about creating a pathway to professional opportunities,” said one of the tournament coordinators.
Beyond the pitch, the tournament is expected to inject economic activity into the county, with local vendors, transport operators and small businesses benefiting from increased traffic to match venues. It also fosters community cohesion as fans come together to cheer on their local teams.
Governor Wavinya reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to supporting grassroots sports and developing youth programs that keep young people engaged and productive.
“Our youth are our greatest asset. By investing in them through sports, we are building a brighter future for Machakos County,” she said.
As the first matches kicked off, excitement was palpable among fans and players alike, setting the stage for weeks of thrilling football action. The tournament will culminate in a grand finale where the top teams will battle for the championship trophy and cash prizes.
With Governor Wavinya’s rallying call for passion, discipline, and teamwork, this year’s edition promises to be bigger, more competitive, and more impactful than ever before.
