There was massive traffic congestion on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway during the weekend that left many travelers stranded. The photos of the jam were so dramatic that aerial views showed many vehicles winding down the highway.

The congestion was proof of how hundreds of Kenyans were travelling back home from Nairobi and other regions for the festive season. However, for those left in Nairobi and its environs, the streets feel a bit empty with some stores closed and neighbours off to the countryside for Christmas-related festivities.
You can still enjoy Christmas if you are not traveling home. Here are a few ideas to make sure you do not feel left out
- Consider national parks
You have worked so hard during the year. You deserve a break. If you love nature and wildlife, Kenya’s national parks are a nice treat. The Kenya Wildlife Service recently announced bus shuttle services for weekends and public holidays during the festive period.
The service is available for Nairobi National Park, Lake Nakuru National Park, and Aberdares National Park. Head out and enjoy some scenic views and wildlife. A change of scenery will do your mind and body some good.
2. What about a road trip?
Who doesn’t love a nice, relaxing road trip? Air in your hair, snacks packed, and dressed comfortably. Yes, people go on road trips all the time; you have probably gone on some yourself. It doesn’t mean you cannot do it again during Christmas.
Get out of the house and enjoy the road. Call your friends who are not traveling home and organize an enjoyable road trip. It would be a great occasion where you have a good time without worrying about going back to work so soon, if you have a job.
3. A staycation would be great
You can also go for a staycation. It is a wonderful way to break the monotony of staying home. Book that room, pack a few clothes, and have a good time. Order some room service, swim in the pool or relax, and make memorable moments this Christmas.
Staying home the entire day can be boring sometimes, and a staycation provides a good escape. Treat yourself, have some good food and drinks, and make the festive season count. Recharge!
4. Go out for a meal
Perhaps you do not want to go to a park, road trip, or staycation. Instead of cooking at home, you can choose to go out for a meal. Some restaurants will be open during the festive season.
Clean up, dress well, and go out for a meal. Sit down, enjoy every bite, pay your bill and head out full and happy. Just because you are not around family does not mean you have to be bored. Make yourself happy in little ways like having lunch at a restaurant.
5. Have a movie-watching marathon
If you are not in the mood to go out, you can still enjoy your time indoosr during the Christmas season. A movie-watching marathon is one way to do it. The internet has made it so easy to find so many types of movies that you should be able to find something that suits you.
If you are a movie fanatic already, catch up on those series you haven’t had time to watch. Order some nice food or cook and have a good time. Spoil yourself because the new year is coming and you may not have as much free time.
6. Have a party
What’s Christmas if it’s not a party? The cooking, gifts, and joyous atmosphere is perfect. Call your friends and have a party. Again, you can cook or order food and simply have a good time. Play games, do some karaoke, and enjoy the nice company.
Life is fun with more people around. The laughter, food, and play is good for your well-being. Take the time off and make memories with your friends. You never know, you may even meet new people if your friends bring along company.
Family is a big part of Christmas around the world. However, sometimes we are not able to be with family for various reasons. You can still enjoy the season with the above pointers in mind. Go out, order a meal, have a party, or watch movies, and enjoy the free time.
