After a video which went
viral on Social Media, in which a Chinese national was shown caning a Kenyan hotel staff, the
suspects were arrested and investigations launched.

They were later taken to court
and accused of an assault. It was later discovered that Kenyans who work for
Chez Wou Restaurant in Kileleshwa, Nairobi were whipped on reporting to work
late.

The four were Deng
Hailan, Chang Yueping, Ou Qiang and Yu Ling.

Their actions were
condemned by the Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Wu Peng saying that all Chinese nationals in the country
should abide by the Kenyan laws.

On Thursday, Interior
Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i ordered their deportation shortly after a
court asked to continue being detained for more investigation on assault and
immigration offences.

“The court has considered
the fact that the suspects are a flight risk and they will abscond court if released. I allow their
detention for 15 days,” ruled Hellen Okwami, the principal Magistrate.

The court found on
Thursday that the four suspects lacked work permits and their immigration documents had expired.

In 2019, the Cabinet
Secretary issued similar orders for deportation of other four Chinese nationals
who were found engaging in
retail business activities in Gikomba, Nairobi.

Coincidentally, the four
were also in the country with Invalid documents.

The CS further warned all
foreigners found engaging in small scale trade that they risked being deported when found.

“We do not have a
classification of foreign traders coming into the country to conduct trade or
hawk,” he explained.

Another case is that of
Liu Jiagi who was deported following his arrest for referring to the President,
and the people of Kenya, as
monkeys.

The suspect was secretly
captured in a video by his worker he had hired in his shop in Ruiru, Kiambu County.
