NAIROBI, Kenya – President William Ruto has promised to construct expressway along the busy Thika Superhighway, a major 8-lane (expanding to 12 lanes in sections) highway linking Nairobi to the industrial town of Thika.

Speaking on the afternoon of Friday, December 12, 2025, when he graced the 62nd Jamhuri Day national celebrations at Nyayo National Stadium in Nairobi, the head of state observed that the Thika Superhighway is currently congested.

“I understand that many people live in Thika. And so, the Thika Superhighway is now congested, and there is always heavy traffic being witnessed on that road.”

In his own words, President Ruto, who was accompanied by First Lady Mama Rachel Ruto, Ghanaian President John Mahama, and other top government officials, went on:

“I am glad to also announce that from next year, just the same way we have the Nairobi Expressway from JKIA to James Gichuru Road, we shall also construct an expressway from Thika to Museum Hill so that people who suffer due to traffic jams don’t experience that again.”

Why the national government is collaborating with Nairobi County

President Ruto disclosed that the national government is collaborating with the county government of Nairobi in the implementation of various development projects in the Kenyan capital.

“There are a lot of things we have agreed to work with the County Government of Nairobi on. There are so many stalled road projects. We have now agreed that we shall return all the contractors to the sites. We are going to do 60 kilometers of road here in Nairobi,” added President Ruto.

He gave an example of Muhuri Road in Dagoretti South, Mama Wahu Road in Dagoretti South, Mihang’o Link bypass in Embakasi East, Umoja One STA Road in Embakasi West, Thindigua Road in Roysambu and Road C in Embakasi South.

“Also, you have seen the road that had stalled along Valley Road. We have brought a contractor who is already on site, working. There is also ongoing work along Ngong Road. Also, there are ongoing works along Haile Selassie Avenue,” President Ruto said.

Other road projects to be undertaken in the Nairobi metropolitan area

The head of state also announced that, following the completion of the Nairobi Expressway, beginning this December, as Kenyans break for the Christmas festivities, his administration will construct the old road below the Nairobi Expressway.

“The road will begin from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), then pass through here at Nyayo National Stadium to ABC Place. We shall also do beautification along this road so that Nairobi can look like the capital city of Kenya,” he further said.

Additionally, President Ruto observed that so many people live outside Nairobi, but they work and do business in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).

“Many people live in Kiserian, Rongai and Ngong. There is a lot of traffic in the morning when people are coming into the CBD and going back home in the evening. I would wish to announce that beginning next year, the road from Bomas of Kenya to Rongai, Kiserian. And the road from Bomas of Kenya, through Karen to Ngong and Bulbul, all the way to Kiserian, we shall make it a dual carriageway so that the residents can move swiftly moving forward,” explained the head of state amid cheers from the crowd.
