The Ministry of Health has announced major strides in advancing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) under President William Ruto’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA).
According to the Ministry, a total of 106,542 Community Health Promoters, representing 99.6 percent of the target, have already been trained and equipped to deliver essential health services at the community level.
In addition, 8.8 million households out of the targeted 12.5 million have so far been registered on the Electronic Community Health Information System (eCHIS), with the registration exercise ongoing to ensure that every household across the country is captured.
To further boost Human Resources for Health, the Ministry has operationalized the Kenya Human Resource Advisory Council (KHHRAC). At the same time, membership in Social Health Insurance has recorded a sharp increase of 22.3 percent, rising from 8 million under the former National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) to 28.8 million beneficiaries now covered under the Social Health Authority (SHA).
The progress outlined during the Principal Secretaries’ Monthly Meeting chaired by the Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei, presented updates on BETA’s implementation in healthcare financing, human resources development and digitisation of the health ecosystem.
The meeting also highlighted other national milestones, including Kenya’s credit rating upgrade to B, which reflects renewed investor confidence and a stronger economic outlook, the successful hosting of the CHAN tournament and the roll-out of the e-GP procurement system aimed at enhancing transparency, efficiency and accountability in public procurement.
Koskei noted that the updates on UHC were part of a broader review of government commitments under BETA, emphasizing that “sustaining this momentum through coordinated efforts across ministries is essential in delivering tangible benefits to Kenyans.”
The monthly meetings, introduced as part of President Ruto’s administration, serve as a high-level platform where all Principal Secretaries convene to review government performance, assess progress on BETA commitments and agree on cross-ministerial priorities. The sessions are chaired by the Head of Public Service and are designed to enhance accountability, improve coordination between ministries and fast-track delivery of government programs.
