The Senate has gazetted a Special Sitting for August 20, 2025, to deliberate on the impeachment of Kericho Governor Eric K. Mutai.
In a gazette notice dated August 18, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi confirmed that the session will take place in the Senate Chamber, Parliament Buildings, Nairobi, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
The announcement followed formal communication from Kericho County Assembly Speaker Patrick Mutai, who on Monday submitted the Assembly’s August 15 resolution to impeach Governor Mutai. The resolution cited allegations of misappropriation of public and donor funds, abuse of office, and authorisation of illegal payments to contractors.
“All 33 Members of the County Assembly voted in favour of the motion to remove H.E. Dr. Erick K. Mutai from office pursuant to Article 181 of the Constitution and Section 33 of the County Governments Act,” the letter stated.
The impeachment motion, initiated by Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony, accused the governor of overseeing the irregular disbursement of Sh85 million to contractors for incomplete or fictitious projects. Despite mounting a spirited defense, Mutai lost the vote in a tense session, marking the second attempt to oust him from office.
Governor Mutai has rejected the accusations, insisting they are politically driven.
In addition to the impeachment debate, the sitting will also feature the swearing-in of Consolata Nabwire Wakwabubi as the new Senator.
The Senate will now examine the evidence and determine whether to uphold or overturn the County Assembly’s decision. If upheld, Mutai will be removed from office.
The outcome is expected to carry significant political weight, both in Kericho County and nationally, as it underscores the growing resolve of County Assemblies to hold governors accountable.
