Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria, has warned that anyone found littering in the Central Business District (CBD) will be arrested.
In a statement issued on Friday, August 29, 2025, Mosiria said county officers will take firm enforcement action against individuals who dump waste instead of using designated litter bins.
“We will arrest anyone found dumping waste in the CBD instead of using the bins. The culture of littering must stop, so do not blame us for taking action against offenders,” Mosiria stated.
He urged members of the public to play an active role in keeping the city clean by reporting incidents of littering to county officers for immediate action.
“If you see anyone littering, please report to our officers within the CBD so that action can be taken if they refuse to use the available litter bins,” he said.
As part of the county’s anti-littering campaign, Mosiria announced that new plastic litter bins have been installed across the CBD. He assured residents that the bins are designed from materials with no resale value to discourage vandalism and theft.
“We have installed new litter bins made of plastic material that has no value to thieves. Please protect them because they belong to you. If you see anyone attempting to vandalise them, be the first to stop them,” he said.

The Chief Officer linked the cleanup efforts to Nairobi’s broader ambition of matching global metropolitan cities in standards of cleanliness.
“This is the only way Nairobi can compete with global cities like New York and London in terms of cleanliness,” he added.
The latest directive comes weeks after Mosiria issued a similar warning to hawkers operating in undesignated areas. At the time, he said both traders and their customers would be arrested for aiding illegal street vending that disrupts pedestrian movement and public safety.
