Nominated education CS Magoha backs increasing university fee

Education Cabinet Secretary Nominee Professor George Magoha
has backed the idea of increasing tuition fees for government-sponsored students
in institutions of higher learning. Magoha attributed the increment to changing
times.

Speaking during his vetting at County Hall, he made it clear
that the Sh 48,000 proposal by vice chancellors was an outrageous figure. The nominee
emphasized the importance of consulting different stakeholders in the education
sector including students before making any decision.

The standard fees is Sh16,000. Increasing
it three times will make it hard for students from humble backgrounds to access
higher learning considering HELB does not give every applicant financial
assistance.
