On Monday, August 18, President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga convened a joint ODM–Kenya Kwanza Parliamentary Group (PG) meeting at Karen, Nairobi, bringing together MPs from both coalitions to consolidate their political partnership ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The meeting builds on the Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two leaders last year and is seen as a key step in shaping the future of bipartisan cooperation in Kenya’s political landscape.
At the center of discussions was a 10-point programme steered by a committee chaired by former nominated Senator Agnes Zani. The agenda focuses on economic recovery, job creation, lowering the cost of living, electoral reforms, youth and women empowerment, strengthening devolution, and anti-corruption measures.
The MPs also deliberated on provisions for healing and compensation for families affected by past protests, reaffirming the significance of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report.
The report provides a roadmap for bipartisan reforms in Parliament, including electoral justice, sustainable political party funding and a shared framework for budget-making.
Observers note that this meeting highlights the continued commitment of Ruto and Raila to collaborative governance, setting a framework for policy discussions and political alignment ahead of the next elections. The session also underscores efforts to ensure that both political blocs work together on national priorities, signaling a strategic partnership that goes beyond mere political rhetoric.
The meeting comes at a time when public attention is focused on the implementation of reforms and delivery of services, particularly in areas such as job creation, youth empowerment, and anti-corruption measures. Analysts suggest that the 10-point programme could serve as a blueprint for coordinated action between the two coalitions, potentially reducing partisan gridlock in Parliament.
By bringing MPs from ODM and Kenya Kwanza together, the meeting further solidifies the working relationship between Ruto and Raila, emphasizing the importance of dialogue, compromise, and joint policy implementation in Kenya’s political future.
The joint PG meeting represents a significant milestone in Kenyan politics, signaling a willingness to work across party lines and prioritize national interest over political differences, setting the tone for the remaining period leading up to the 2027 General Election.
