Manchester United’s Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki have dashed Eddie Howe’s hopes to defend the Carabao Cup.

The Newcastle United boss won the first major domestic trophy in March 2025, after beating Liverpool 2-1 in the cup final match.
However, the team slipped in the Tuesday, January 13, match against City following the 0-2 loss at St. James Park in London, United Kingdom (UK).
How Newcastle v Man City game went down
Semenyo scored an opener at the 53rd minute before his second goal was disallowed after a controversial VAR consultation.
Manchester City’s new signing’s score received a boost in the stoppage time after Cherki’s goal in the 90+9 minute.
Pep Guardiola’s men will be eying the first Carabao Cup final since 2021 as Newcastle returns to Wembley in the London derby match with hopes of defending the cup.
What are Newcastle’s hopes?
Since taking the helm at the Magpies in 2021, Howe’s hopes are still alive.
The English football manager told BBC Sport that he still hopes the team will defend the trophy
“We are still alive. We are still in there fighting. It is very difficult to turn it around, but it’s still possible, and football can conjure up some magical moments.
“Last year, we were on the other side of this scoreline. We went to Arsenal, won 2-0 in that game, and we felt it was still very much alive.
“It was all about the next goal in the tie. I think that’s going to be the case in this one. If we can get the next goal, we are still very much in it,” Howe noted.
