Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp has announced he will leave the club at the end of the season, with the team currently being at the top of the English Premier League (EPL) table.
In a video posted on X, formerly Twitter, Klopp said he is running out of energy.
“I will leave the club at the end of the season. I can understand that it is a shock for a lot of people in this moment but I can explain it or try to explain it. I love everything about this club but I still take this decision…I am running out of energy.”
He added,
“I have known this for a long time. I cannot do the job again and again and again. And, after all the years we had together and all the things we went through together, the respect grew for you and the least thing I owe you is the truth and that is the truth.”
The 56-year-old old German informed the club of his decision in November but Liverpool players were only told shortly before the shock announcement on Friday morning.
Klopp’s assistants Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz will also leave, while sporting director Jorg Schmadtke will exit the club at the end of the January transfer window.
How long has Klopp been at Liverpool?
Klopp took over at Liverpool in October 2015, replacing Brendan Rodgers at the club. He had taken a short break from football following an impressive seven-year period with Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.
He led Liverpool to the UEFA Europa League final in 2015/16 and the UEFA Champions League final in 2017/18, although the Reds lost in both matches.
Klopp was back in the Champions League final the following season with his side winning 2-0 against Tottenham Hotspur.
The Reds finished a point behind champions Manchester City in the 2018/2019 season.
The following season, Klopp steered Liverpool to their first Premier League title after 30 years of dry spell.
Liverpool is currently at the top of the 2023/2024 EPL table with 48 points, followed by Manchester City and Arsenal in second and third places respectively with 43 points.
