Nairobi, Kenya Christmas is a time to be with family and friends. For many, parents live in the countryside, so they have to travel to be with them.
As a city girl packing for Christmas travel to a rural area, there are a few things to keep in mind. Here are tips on what to pack to ensure an easy time with friends and family.
Jeans and T-shirts
Jeans and T-shirts are your best friends in the countryside. They are comfortable and can handle all the cooking and activities you will be engaged in. Don’t wear those fancy tops and trousers, maybe one or two if there will be a special occasion. You want a laid-back look that allows you to enjoy the countryside’s nature.
Dresses and skirts
Find a long enough dress or skirt when going to your rural home. You want to be comfortable and not have your neighbours staring at your outfit. How many dresses or skirts you carry depends on how long you will be at home. If you have a free dress or skirt, carry it. You will appreciate the comfort these clothes offer.
We all know how conservative parents can be. The last thing you need is a lecture or stun glances from your beloved parents. So, those tight-fitting dresses and skirts might not be a good idea unless they are not an issue where you are going.
Shoes
Choose your footwear prudently when going for Christmas in the countryside. Those 6-inch heels are a no unless there will be an occasion suitable for them. Instead, go with flat shoes and sandals.
You do not want to walk on the grass at home in raised footwear. And, don’t forget a pair of black sneakers. However much you love your pair of white sneakers, you do not want them ruined.
Cardigan
Even though you may have some warm sweaters at home, carry an extra one for cold on the road and chilly mornings and evenings at home. If you have a favourite hoodie, carry it. A jumper is also a good choice. Don’t carry blazers unless there will be an occasion for it.
Shawl
Remember to carry a nice shawl (leso). It is not only good for covering yourself but also serves as a nice towel. Moreover, we all know how functional a leso can be for example when cooking back in the rural areas.
Yes, you may have all these clothes back at home but carrying some is always a good idea just in case.
Skincare
If you use specific skin care products, you need to pack them. That way, you are able to stick to your skincare routine. Pack them in a zip lock bag or any other plastic bag to prevent ruining your other belongings in case of spills. You can also have your lotions and makeup in a different compartment in your travel bag and have them in an upright position.
Packing for Christmas to the countryside should not be a headache. Include some jeans, t-shirts, flat shoes, a cardigan, and a shawl not forgetting your skincare products. Have an easier time at home with family and friends with a dress code that keeps you comfortable.
