High Court postpones ruling on Maribe, Jowie murder case again

The High Court has again postponed a ruling on the homicide case facing journalist Jaque Maribe and Joseph Irungu alias Jowie over the murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani.
According to Maribe’s lawyer, she failed to show up in court following an illness and asked the court for an adjournment.

The court was told that Maribe was on her way to the hospital. Justice Grace Nzioka said she would deliver the verdict by March 15, 2023, due to her busy schedule.

The judge however noted that the judgment was ready for delivery.

“I have looked at my diary and the court is not available in the whole month of January and February. Other than this matter I have a few other serious matters that I am dealing with. I will not be available from the 8th of February to 8th of March. My earliest judgement would be 15th of March,” she said.

How many times has the Maribe, Jowie verdict been postponed?

The verdict was previously set to be read on October 6, 2023, but was pushed forward after Lady Justice Grace Nzioka was reported to be ill.

A new date, December 15, 2023, was set but the delivery of the judgment was again postponed to today, January 26, 2024.

Today’s ruling has now been postponed to March.

Maribe has earlier expressed her frustration with the repeated cases of the verdict being postponed but this time the blame was on her.

Monica Kimani’s murder

In September 2018, the then rising news anchor at Citizen TV Maribe was arrested as a suspect in the murder of Monica Kimani, a businesswoman in Nairobi.

Detectives uncovered inconsistencies in her timeline of events. At the time, Maribe was engaged to Jowie in an event posted on social media.

Following her arrest and times in and out of court, Maribe later left Citizen TV.

Jowie had been arrested earlier and is the first accused person in the murder of Monica.

His story did not add up either, with officers arguing that the gunshot wound on his shoulder could have been self-inflicted to cover up what actually happened.

Monica’s body was found in a bathtub in her Kilimani apartment with her throat slit and her hands tied to the back.

Her body was discovered by her brother, who had unsuccessfully tried to call her and decided to visit her house where he stumbled on her body.
