The Bodaboda sector in the country has been negatively tainted, following repeated instances of rogue behaviours and law breaking, described in 2024 as a den of criminals, by current Interior Cabinet Secreatary Kipchumba Murkomen, while he was the Minister for Transport.
However, in Kitale, the sector is changing tune in the recently concluded elections. Speaking during the sector’s election on Thursday 19 at Kwanza Sub-County, Chairperson of the Bodaboda operators in Trans Nzoia County Vincent Murunga, is emphasizing on operators operating without license to join driving schools.

Murunga said that majority of accidents happening are involving riders with no licenses, as they lack an understanding of traffic rules, to operate on the road, a factor that has tainted the sector as initiators of many road accidents involving pedestrians and public service vehicles across the country.
“”For those of us who are strangers on the road because our sector is big and we cannot say we have closed it, we still need people. For those not familiar with traffic rules, as Trans Nzoia, we have a driving school, we want to look for sponsors to put in resources to ensure that our young men have the correct documentation for the sake of road safety, as it is a huge sector in the country,” Murunga emphasized.
Murunga on Bodaboda credit companies
He further called on credit unions, especially those that provide motorcycle loans, to stop harassing Bodaboda operators when they are demanding their debts, with all harassed operators being asked to submit their complaints to their offices.
Bodaboda operators have constantly made complains on credit companies repossessing their motor bikes even with small balance and resale, undermining the efforts made by the operators.
“We have loan vendors, we were not taking the Bodaboda for you to again repossess them, we are paying. If you know you have an oustanding debt with any loaning company, avail your details with office, so that we can see find a long lasting solution and avoid hide and seek games,” he said.
The event was also attended by the Secretary of the Trans Nzoia County Assembly, Moses Lupao, who urged Bodaboda operators to ensure that they are registered with the Health Insurance by the government Social Health Authority (SHA), so that they can receive affordable treatment when they need it.
Concerns were also raised by Bodaboda operators towards the County Government to beef up security, following recent killings and stealing of motor bikes within the county.
