On Thursday, 18th 2024, Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, will take a petition in court seeking to remove Justice Esther Maina from office.
Gachagua who was speaking in Elgeyo Marakwet County, on Sunday 14th 2024, said that the petition seeking the removal of Justice Maina was a result of Chief Justice Martha Koome’s recommendation.
Why Gachagua wants Justice Maina out
The Deputy President claimed that his reputation was tarnished after Justice Esther Maina formally asserted that some of his wealth is a result of corrupt dealings.
“On Thursday, this coming week at 2:15 pm, I will personally present a petition before Lady Chief Justice Martha Koome against Justice Esther Maina for her removal from the Judiciary for misconduct and corruption,” Gachagua said.

While accusing Justice Esther of lucking courtesy, The Deputy President observed that it was time for Chief Justice Martha Koome to show Kenyans the number of formal written requests against officers in the Judicature.
Rigathi Gachagua’s plans to have Justice Maina’s removal from office come in the middle of a push and a pull between the Executive and Judiciary since President William Ruto alleged that there is massive corruption in the Judiciary which is making his agendas for Kenyans sabotaged and therefore he promised to face corruption in the Judiciary head-on.
In 2022, the court ruled that Gachagua amassed KSh 202 million through corrupt activities and should be returned to the government.
The second in command’s application to have his account unfrozen was ruled against by Justice Manina and after the general election, the DP recovered his money back.
Raila vows to defend Judiciary
Meanwhile, opposition leaders vowed to defend the Judiciary from the executive’s continuous attacks.
Azimio leader Raila Odinga said on Thursday last week that Ruto is slowly getting the country back to dark days where dictatorship was non-negotiable.
Odinga, who was accompanied by some leaders affiliated with Azimio La Umoja, said Ruto’s current stance on the Judiciary is a political script to frighten the Judicial officials.
“Everybody must be subject to the court, we want to tell the judges of the courts not to be cowards, we will defend you, we stand together as the people of Kenya behind the Judiciary,” said Odinga.
